Red Seal apprenticeship exam practice, first year to Red Seal

Your Red Seal is four years of questions.

Practice for every level exam and your Red Seal. Red tracks every answer and shows you what to study next.

  1. Year 1

    31%

First mock exam. Red marks what you missed.

  2. Year 2

    48%

Your next mock leans toward those blocks.

  3. Year 3 · you

    63%

    The red blocks are shrinking.

  4. Year 4

    74%

Over the line. You have written this format before.

  5. Red Seal exam

    70%

The pass mark. Check your score before you book.

Example readiness scores. Yours come from your own mock exams.

Apprenticeship levels don't lock anything here.

Your province may call them levels, years or periods. Every quiz and mock exam covers your whole trade, Red Seal material included, from your first week. Tell Red your trade and your year, and it pitches its explanations at where you are.

So when do hours matter?

For one thing: whether your province or territory lets you write the Red Seal exam. Hours never limit what you can learn.

Four years. One Red Seal exam. Start writing it now.

  1. Year 1

Write a mock exam in your first year.

It will be rough, and that is the point. The Red Seal exam covers your whole trade, so your first mock shows you what four years of school is building toward.

  2. Year 2

See the blocks that cost you marks.

Every mock breaks your score down by block. The ones under the line show in red, so you fix those instead of rereading what you already know.

  3. Year 3

    Red leaves you a note.

After a mock exam, Red points at your weakest block, and your next mock leans toward it. You spend your study time where the marks are.

  4. Year 4

Walk into the Red Seal exam knowing your score.

125 questions, 4 hours, 70 percent to pass. By now you have written it before, and your readiness score tells you whether to book or what to fix first.

Example screens. Your blocks and scores will be your own.

  • Your weak blocks, found for you

Mock exam results break down by block, and your next mock leans toward the ones you miss.

  • A readiness score before you book

One number that tells you if you are ready to write, with a score for every block behind it.

Study the book your school handed you.

Upload your manual, your school notes and your code book, then ask Red about any page in plain words.

  • PDF and Word files. Upload from your phone or computer.

Why first year still counts

School teaches one level at a time. The Red Seal exam tests all of it at once.

At school

  1. Level 1
  2. Level 2
  3. Level 3
  4. Level 4

One level, one exam, then the next. Each one feels done when you pass it.

On Red Seal exam day

One multiple-choice exam covering your whole trade. First-year material counts as much as fourth-year.

Where Red comes in

Red keeps every answer you give from your first year on, so a block you learned in Level 1 and forgot by Level 4 shows up on your mock exam results before it shows up on exam day.

Red Seal exam questions, answered.

Can I study for a level I have not reached yet?

Yes. Your year and your hours do not limit what you study on Red Seal Hub. Every quiz and mock exam covers your whole trade, Red Seal material included, from your first week.

Do I need my hours before I can use Red Seal Hub?

No. Hours matter when your province or territory decides whether you can write the Red Seal exam. They do not matter for studying.

Does the practice match my level exams?

Level exams are set by your province, so the topics and order can differ from place to place. Practice on Red Seal Hub follows the Red Seal Occupational Standard for your trade, the national standard the Red Seal exam is built on.

What is the pass mark for the Red Seal exam?

70 percent. The Red Seal exam is multiple choice, with a 4-hour time limit.

How much does the Red Seal exam cost?

Your province or territory sets the fee. Your apprenticeship authority tells you the amount when you register.

Can I challenge a level exam instead of going to school for it?

In some provinces. In Alberta, for example, apprentices can challenge a period exam to move to the next period without that period of classroom instruction, with their sponsor on board, but must still attend at least one period of classes. Check the rules with your apprenticeship authority.

How do I challenge the Red Seal exam?

If you have the hours in your trade but never finished an apprenticeship, you may be able to challenge the Red Seal exam as a trade qualifier. The Challenge page walks through it.
